Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve answered some of the most common questions below.

Still have a question? Feel free to reach out via email at hello@lotusembodiedtherapy.com.au and we’ll be happy to help.

What is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker?

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers (AMHSW) are skilled in assessment, diagnosis, and delivering evidence-based psychological therapies: much like psychologists and other allied health professionals. What makes an AMHSW unique is our holistic and person-centred approach. We don’t just look at symptoms. we take into account your whole life: your relationships, your strengths, your identity, and the broader systems around you. Our work is trauma-informed, recovery-focused, and grounded in compassion.
At Lotus Embodied Therapy, this means you’ll receive high-quality mental health care in a space where you feel safe and respected.

As an AMHSW, I also provide Focused Psychological Strategies under Medicare.
If you have a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP, you may be eligible for rebates

Do I need a referral to access therapy?

No, you don’t need a referral to access therapy with us.

However, GP Mental Health Care Plan's allow you up to 10 rebated sessions per calendar year.

You have the option to book in privately, you just won’t receive a rebate.
You are welcome to contact us directly to arrange a session or discuss the options that feel right for you.

How do GP Mental Health Care Plans Work?

You will need to make an appointment with your GP to get a Mental Health Care Plan (ensure you tell them this when you book your appointment in as sometimes, they require a different appointment booked in for this).

Initially, your GP will refer you to Stacey for 6 sessions under your MHCP. Once these 6 sessions are completed, Stacey will write a letter to your referring GP, requesting an additional 4 sessions, to make up your 10 sessions per calendar year.

Medicare only allows 10 rebated MHCP sessions per calendar year, so once you complete these, Stacey will request for a re-referral for another 6 sessions in the new year. In the mean time, your fees will be reverted back to private paying at the rate of $130.00 per session until the new year.

Can I use my private health insurance for counselling sessions here?

As an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, most private health insurers will allow you to claim a rebate for counselling sessions, depending on your level of Extras cover. However, we do not process private health claims on your behalf. You will need to check directly with your insurer and submit your claim independently. We’re happy to provide you with a detailed invoice to support your claim.

Do you accept third-party or funded clients (e.g. NDIS)?

Yes! We accept third-party funded clients such as those with NDIS (Self-Managed or Plan-Managed), or other approved organisations. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept NDIA-managed funding.

Please reach out to discuss how your funding arrangement might work with our services.

How do I know if this therapy is right for me?

The therapeutic relationship is central to meaningful progress. If you're unsure, we are happy to have a brief chat before you commit
to a full session. Contact us to book a free 15 minute Discovery Call.
You can also read more about our approach on the website to see if it resonates with you.

What happens before my first appointment?

Once your appointment is confirmed, you’ll receive a short intake form via email, the online link will expire after 7 days. Please complete and return it at least 48 hours before your session to secure your booking.

How often should I attend sessions?

Therapy is tailored to you. Stacey will make a recommendation after your first session based on your needs and goals, but ultimately, the frequency is up to you. Some clients attend weekly, fortnightly, or monthly depending on what’s most supportive and affordable.

Do you offer Telehealth?

Yes. Telehealth sessions are available Australia-wide via phone or secure video. This is a flexible option if you're not local, travelling, or simply prefer the comfort of your own space.

How do I pay for sessions?

Session fees are processed securely via our online payment system on the day of your appointment. For those with pre-approved third-party funding, invoices can be arranged directly with your provider.

How much are sessions?

Session fees are set at a standard rate, and I’m committed to transparency - there are no hidden costs. You’ll receive a clear outline of fees, cancellation policies, and any Medicare rebate eligibility before we begin. Please contact us or check out the services section on our website.

Can I bring my child to a session?

You're welcome to bring your child if needed. However, please be aware that we don’t have childcare facilities, and your child will need to remain in the room with you. For some types of therapy, having children present may not be recommended. Feel free to contact us to discuss your options.

Can I bring a support person?

Yes, you’re welcome to bring a support person along. Whether they sit in with you or wait nearby, we want you to feel comfortable. Just note that the session itself is centred around your needs as the client.

Do you offer couples or family therapy?

At this time, we offer individual therapy only. However, individual sessions can support you in navigating relationship issues, family stress, or parenting challenges. We aim to support you and your significant others - which we will include as directed by you.

Do you have a cancellation policy?

Yes. We ask for at least 48 hours notice for any cancellations. Late cancellations or non-attendance without notice will incur the full session fee. This allows us to offer your spot to someone on our waitlist.
